Water and nutrient fluxes as indicators for the stability of different land use systems on the terra firme near Manaus. Infoteca-e
SHIFT PROJECT ENV 45/2..
The experiments started during the first year of the second phase of this project were continued, such as studies about the effect of trees on soil phosphorus and sulfur abailability, dissolved organic nutrients in rainfall, throughfall, stemflow and soil solution. Additionally, we focussed on the effects of cover crops on tree nutrition, soil nutrient and water dynamics. Soil nitrogen and phosphorus uptake was investigated using different N-15 and P-32 tracer experiments. The fate of fertilizer nitrogen was studied with N-15 labelled ammoniumsulfate in plant, soil, soil extracts and soil solution. In laboratory incubations, the effect of leaf quality on decomposition and incorporation of nutrients into soil organic matter was studied as affected by soil...

Water intake behavior of broiler chickens exposed to heat stress and drinking from bell or and nipple drinkers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Bruno,LDG; Maiorka,A; Macari,M; Furlan,RL; Givisiez,PEN.
The aspects involved in broiler water intake are not well known, despite the importance of water in animal nutrition and physiology. Water intake behavior should be taken into account when deciding on different types of drinkers. Bell and nipple drinkers are the most commonly used in commercial broiler production. Broilers were housed in cages equipped with two different drinker types and raised at two different environmental temperatures (25 and 34 ºC) to evaluate water intake behavior and volume. Broiler water intake behavior was influenced by drinker type. Birds visited bell drinkers less often, but presented higher total water intake per visit to the drinker as compared to those drinking from nipple drinkers. The results of this study suggest that both...

Water ratio effect on the proteins hydrolysis tongue sole by-products (Cynoglossus senegalensis) ArchiMer
Sylla, K. S. B.; Musabyemariya, B.; Berge, Jean-pascal; Seydi, Mg.
In this study the effectiveness of four different water ratio to hydrolyze sole by-products by using Protamex® were compared. Average proteins yields and degree of hydrolysis (DH %) of different hydrolysates were measured, and their peptide profiles were analysed by using gel filtration chromatography. It was found that by changing the hydrolysis conditions it was possible to produce hydrolysates with the same proportion of proteins (60%) and very different in peptide composition (from 294 to 13700 Da).

Water rights for variable supplies AgEcon
Freebairn, John W.; Quiggin, John C..
The relative merits of different systems of property rights to allocate water among different extractive uses are evaluated for the case where variability of supply is important. Three systems of property rights are considered. In the first, variable supply is dealt with through the use of water entitlements defined as shares of the total quantity available. In the second, there are two types of water entitlements, one for water with a high security of supply and the other a lower security right for the residual supply. The third is a system of entitlements specified as state-contingent claims. With zero transaction costs, all systems are efficient. In the realistic situation where transaction costs matter, the system based on state-contingent claims is...

Water Saving Technology in Chinese Rice Production - Evidence from Survey Data AgEcon
Abdulai, Awudu; Glauben, Thomas; Herzfeld, Thomas; Zhou, Shudong.
Whereas water is an important input in rice production, China faces severe problems with increasing demand for water and limited water resources. In conventional paddy production, one of the most important irrigated crops, a significant amount of irrigation water is lost due to percolation and evaporation. Therefore, it exist a vivid research in water saving rice technologies. This paper analyzes the adoption of one of these water-saving rice production technologies, the so-called Ground Cover Rice Production System (GCRPS), in the Hubei province. Based on farm survey data several factors which affect the adoption decision could be identified. The adoption decision is treated as a binary choice problem and therefore a probit model is used for the...

Water temperature in irrigation return flow from the Upper Snake Rock watershed NWISRL
Bjorneberg, D.L..
Water returning to a river from an irrigated watershed could increase the water temperature in the river. The objective of this study was to compare the temperature of irrigation return flow water with the temperature of the diverted irrigation water. Water temperature was measured weekly in the main irrigation canal, 24 return flow streams and one ephemeral stream from 2005 to 2008 in the Upper Snake Rock (USR) watershed. The USR is an 82,000 ha watershed in southern Idaho, USA with about 60% of the area surface irrigated and the remaining area sprinkler irrigated. Median annual water temperatures in irrigation return flow streams were not greater than the water diverted from the river, suggesting that water flowing through the canal system and furrow...

Water, Women, and Local Social Organization in the Western Kenya Highlands AgEcon
Were, Elizabeth; Swallow, Brent M.; Roy, Jessica.
Safe water is widely recognized as both a fundamental human need and a key input into economic activity. Across the developing world, the typical approach to addressing these needs is to segregate supplies of water for domestic use from water for large-scale agricultural production. In that arrangement, the goal of domestic water supply is to provide small amounts of clean safe water for direct consumption, cleaning, bathing and sanitation, while the goal of agricultural water supply is to provide large amounts of lower quality water for irrigated agriculture. A new third use of water is now being given more attention by researchers: small amounts of water employed in selected household enterprises. This third use may be particularly important for women....

Yield stress changes induced by water in polyamide 6: Characterization and modeling ArchiMer
Le Gac, Pierre-yves; Arhant, Mael; Le Gall, Maelenn; Davies, Peter.
This paper considers the effect of water content on mechanical properties of polyamide 6 when used in a humid environment. First an experimental section presents the tensile behavior of polyamide with different amounts of water, with and without a through-thickness water gradient. Water profiles are introduced by immersion in sea water at 25 °C. The effect of testing temperature is also investigated in order to consider the influence of macromolecular chain mobility on the mechanical behavior. Then, in a second section, modelling of yield stress is proposed based on physical considerations. This can be used for life time prediction of PA6 in humid environment when plasticization is the main degradation mechanism.
